NWR: Journalist Develop Skills on Reporting Cases of Child Abuse in Conflict Times

 

About 20 young journalists in Bamenda chief town of the North West region have been equipped with skills and tools on countering Fake news, Hate Speech, misinformation, Disinformation and reporting issues of child abuse and protection in conflict times. This was the focused of a one day workshop organized by Community Solutions Media, CSM on Saturday April 16th, 2021 at Blue Pearl Hotel , Nkwen, Bamenda.

According to the founder of CSM , Sah Terence, the workshop is the beginning of a New breed journalist series, a CMS's program which has an objective to inculcate principled journalistic values in the younger generation of media persons void of sentiments, bias while encouraging objective and fair reports which seems to be an issue in the journalism community. 


Madam Jose Pearl whose focus was on reporting child abuse in conflict time with the region as a case study highlighted that, journalist are the watchdogs of the society and should be mindful of what the report especially on issues related to child abuse.

To her, reports on child abuse should not disclose information relating to the victim to" avoid further traumatic esperience"

At a time when there so much information online especially with relation to the pandemics the world has experienced with the current being the coronavirus pandemic, Digital Rights Activists Pedmia Shatu noted that, it's important for journalist to take a step back to fact-check information using the right sources, disseminate the right information to help people make informed decisions and also do away with fake news.

These young professionals regarded as new breeds, expected to change the face of journalism in the region and country at large, also received some education on hate speech from the founder and CEO of Reconciliation and Development Association RADA Mr Mbidzenyuy Ferdinant Sonyuy.

" If we want to guarantee a different kind of journalism, we should have youths that think differently". If what you do cannot make a difference, make a difference by how you do it,"  he cautiones" Mbidzenyuy noted.

To this Participants Ambo Chris the knowledge and skills acquire will affect his manner of reporting going forward.

"The workshop was a great one for me I got to understand more about reporting issues of child Abuse and Protection. For example if both the victim and perpetrator are children as a reporter I am oblige to cover their faces"


The  New Breed journalist are expected to use the knowledge and skills aquired to report in an accurate, objective and balanced manner void of bias especially in the conflict situation they find themselves.
