Students schooled to Uphold National Symbols, fight Hate Speech






With the quest to combat hate speech which is spreading fast amongst youths, Civil Peace Service in collaboration with the Cameroon Commmunity Media Network CCMN, effected a sensation Campaign in one of the village secondary schools in the North West Region.The session which took place at GBHS Mendakwe on Thursday 15th December 2022 had in attendance over 40 students.


The discussion session kick-started with a presentation on Combating Hatespeech facilitated by Peace Journalist Pechuqui Laurata. While walking participants through this session, the facilitator realized that, most of the students combat hate speech with more hate speech.


"I combat hate speech with hate speech. This is my own way of fighting back" a student said.

Combating hate speech with more hate speech has only led to an upsurge in violence, a threat to peace, social cohesion and more. Facilitator Pechuqui Laurata added that in order to combat hate speech, it is important for everyone to educate their peers, family on hate speech and it's dangers to the targeted person, group and including the society.


The session was followed by another session on values that Cameroonians have in common while identifying the National symbols. The brainstorming session which was facilitated by Peace Journalist Moma Sandrine gave students the opportunity to identify the different values and symbols they are aware of.

According to the facilitator Moma Sandrine these values like love, peace and symbols which these students identify as the flag, the anthem, the motto, code of arms, the seal are what propel national unity and ought to be respected.


The young people from the first and final grade of school have taken the commitment to educate their peers, families on hate speech and it's dangers while promoting the core values and symbols of the nation that brings unity, peace including fostering social cohesion.
