Bamenda Journalists strengthen Skills on Conflict Sensitive Reporting

About 25 journalists from diverse media outlets in Bamenda have strengthened their skills on Conflict sensitive reporting at hilltop hotel, on the 29 and 30th July 2021.The training which lasted for two days was marked by a series of presentations facilitated by different trainers while highlighting to these media practitioners the ways to go about reporting to prevent or de-escalate conflict.
During his presentation on sensitive conflict reporting, conflict management and fake news, Mr Eugene Nforngwa highlighted that, journalist pen could either influence a crisis negatively or positively.

"Journalist need to realise that they have a lot of power in what the say which could influence how people think. They need to use the power they have to influence their communities in a positive way by showing the different parties in conflict zones alternatives in resolving a conflict without resulting to violence"
As hate speech continues to be a tool used in fueling violence in crisis zones, Abong Blaise explained that, media organs can influence behaviourial change in their communities by debunking and making sure that the words their journalists use are void of hate.

Strengthening their capacities on how different advocacy is from journalism, Jude Ntam, a participant and Peace journalist elucidates that, knowledge acquired from the training will reshape his reporting.
"I now know how to carry out my work not just as a journalist but as a peace Journalist who is out to mitigate hate speech because it is very eminent in our reporting and how we relate with colleagues".
Participants were tasked by these different facilitators to put all what they acquired from the training into practice. Worth noting is the fact that , this training was organized by #DefyHateNow. These same sessions have been held in South West and Litoral regions of Cameroon and will happen in Yaounde in the forthcoming weeks.
